It seemed almost out of nowhere a white paw cuffed Heronpaw's ear hard. Behind him stood his very unhappy looking brother, Lightningpaw. "Maplepaw is right, this is our punishment. Don't drag other cats in so you don't have to do so much. And I am not agreeing with her because I like her." Snapping the last part as he saw Heronpaw start to make a face. He knew his brother too well. Lightningpaw's skin was burning so hot, he thought he must be steaming, but hid it well as he glared at his brother a moment, their green gazes equally met. Then he looked to Firepaw with a small smile. "As I said, this is our responsibilty but if you really want to help I can't stop you. Just don't do the harder or more gross jobs that we're supposed to do." he said, looking back pointedly at his brother.

Maplepaw's fur bristled angrily and she glared at Firepaw. "Don't speak to me like that!" she snapped. Heronpaw just looked at her and grinned. Fortunately, Lightningpaw arrived before she could take the apprentices' ears off and she exhaled loudly before visibly relaxing. How was it that his brother managed to annoy her so? It seemed to be some natural talent StarClan had given him. Heronpaw, however, was not as happy to see his brother as Maplepaw was. He grunted and ducked his head away, flicking his own paw across the black and white tom's muzzle. "I was just being nice!" he complained," And this is what I get! I thought she might want to help so we could talk." He blew air through his nose in a hmpf and stared at Lightningpaw, meeting his gaze. Just faintly, under the cover of anger, he could see how he had taken his comment about Maplepaw. Heronpaw grinned and winked. "Why don't I just finish up and you and Maplepaw run along? "

Lightningpaw barely flinched at the swipe, keeping his gaze equal with his brother. He rolled his eyes at his excuses, shaking his head. "Yeah, more like trying to get out of doing our work." he said flatly, knowing his brother too well. At his next reaction, he was a little taken back. As if he couldn't embarrass him anymore! He wasn't even sure how he felt about this! Getting nose to nose with his brother, he glared evenly and hard at him, eyes hard. "Go to the Elders Den. Now." he said seethingly, fur bristling. Really, his brother was one of the few to really get under this good natured cats fur. The scary thing was, the way he sounded was almost like their father except a lot younger.

Heronpaw met his brother's gaze with twinkling eyes. So this was how the game was being played, was it? Roles had reversed and for now he was happy to let them stay. Until he grew bored of course. "Tsk tsk," he clucked," I thought you were meant to be the nice one." He grinned and pulled away, padding lightly past Lightningpaw. Just to irritate him further, he ran his tail along the apprentice's back in a reassuring gesture.
Maplepaw watched as the grey tom left and resisted the temptation to claw his ears for his rude remarks. Heronpaw was known for his loose tongue but this was too much. "I'm going to kill him," she hissed in Lightningpaw's ear. She had other reasons for getting close to the black and white tom other than making threats. If he bolted after Heronpaw someone would have to restrain him before another fight broke out.

Lightningpaw grimaced, standing stiff as his brother teased him and taunted him. Oh, he was so pushing it. He didn't even glance after him, not moving an inch as he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He couldn't afford to lose his temper again, he couldn't let Heronpaw get to him. As Maplepaw spoke, he sighed and his whole body relaxed. "I know...me too." he said slowly, his fur laying flat and his shoulders slumping."Ok...I'll see you later, I need to finish my chores." he said tiredly, all his anger faded and now just replaced with exhaustion.

Firepaw sat, turned away from Maplepaw. She shook her head and watched as Heronpaw walked to the elders' den. She finally turned to Maplepaw and meowed, "Sorry, Maplepaw. It just sort of ticked me off when you were, uh, being rude to Heronpaw. And how you told me I couldn't help them." She shook her head and stared Maplepaw in the eyes.

Applesong looked at Maplepaw and Firepaw. "Well, I'm going to take a nap now, so...I'll catch up with you later," she told them. Applesong stumbled into the warriors' den and flattened out some leaves to make a dent. She laid down in it, and slowly began to fall asleep...

Maplepaw watched Lightningpaw leave, the young cat's exhaustion heavy in the air. Why did Heronpaw have to taunt him so? She sighed and turned back to Firepaw who was now apologetic. "It's okay," she murmured half-heartedly. She gave a she-cat a small smile to show there was no harm done between them. "Heronpaw and I obviously don't get along. But he does have to do his duties by himself. It's their punishment," she explained softly.
