Emberlight screeched in pain. "Quietshadow! My kits are coming!" She felt like her whole body was exploding. "Get me Duskfur!"

"Oh dear." Quietshadow grabbed a poppy head and a mouthful of borage leaves and ran into the warriors' den. "Duskfur! Emberlight is about to kit--come out here!" Without waiting for Duskfur to follow, he trotted off to the direction of the nursery. "He's coming, don't worry," he assured her. "Eat one of each for now. You'll get more borage in a bit and more poppy if the pain gets worse." Quietshadow placed a borage leaf and a poppy seed in front of her.

Icestar heard yelping. She jumped out of her den and ran over to the nursery. "If you were just a bit louder cats could hear you all the way over to the moonpool." she teased. Icestar sat down and noticed the kits were coming. She smiled and said, "they will be beautiful." She wved her tail and noticed Quietshadow. "Make sure she gets a lot of those poppy seeds, or she will be acting like she's dying. Trust me...." she told him.

"We need to be careful about too many poppyseeds," Quietshadow cautioned Icestar. "If the pain is completely numbed by them, then we won't be able to tell if something goes wrong. My mentor. Grayspots, was pretty inexperienced at first because her mentor was killed by a fox while she was still an apprentice. The first time she was at a kitting, she made that mistake. The first kit got stuck and by the time she realized that, the kit was dead. The queen wound up dying too and so did the whole litter. Grayspots never really got over that." He sighed and glanced at Emberlight. "She's doing fine, though."

Duskfur jumped in alarm at Quietshadow's call, and made a dash for the nursery. Horrible situations were already making their way into his mind, as much as he wished he could stop them. Emberlight... He arrived at the entrance, breathing rapidly. Icestar's here too... "I-is everything going okay?" He stammered, trying to look past Icestar and Quietshadow.

"Medically, yes," Quietshadow meowed to Duskfur. "Emberlight is experiencing a good deal of pain right now, but that's typical of any queen who is having her kits. The kits themselves appear to be moving along fine. I'll be giving her another poppyseed in a moment. In the meantime, you should just try to comfort her."

Emberlight yelped again. "Hello!? Kits coming!" Once the attention was directed back at her and her kits, she looked up at Duskfur.
*skipping kitting*

Duskfur glanced down at the three squirming bundles of fur, his heart pounding. I'm actually a father. This is... this is crazy. What do I do ? How do I act? "We should, um, lick them or something, don't we, Quietshadow? To keep them warm?" He squirmed up next to Emberlight, looking at his paws and feeling completely useless.

"Just wait for a moment. They're moving and breathing, as far as I can tell, and thus doing well. Emberlight will lick them first, and this is important for the kits to bond with their mother. Let her go on with that for a moment, then take over the licking so she can get another borage leaf." Quietshadow sat down and flicked a leaf over in their direction with his tail.

Emberlight started licking the first kit, a golden tabby like herself. What would be a nice name for her? After the tabby was all clean, she moved onto the next kit, a golden tabby with black and brown splotches. And him? Duskfur and I hadn't thought of name's yet... Lastly, she groomed the last kit, a black, dark brown, gold, and white tortoiseshell. A tortoiseshell...Duskfur won't be happy. But what will her name be? Finally Emberlight looked up with three happy kits snuggling close to her belly. "Borage leaves? Why do I need borage leaves?" Then she glanced at Duskfur, staring at the kits intently. "What will their names be?"

"The borage is a standard herb for any queen," Quietshadow meowed, sitting down. "It helps milk production and is also used for fevers with any cat. You won't need it long; only for the first few days. Oh, and Duskfur, go ahead and lick." He tucked his tail around his paws and calmly watched the new kits.

Emberlight nodded, chewing up the bitter leaf and swallowing. She looked down at her kits. "My kits. My kits." She licked the one that looked like her on the head, then looked at the other kits. Names clicked into place. The splotchy tabby sneezed. "I think I figured out some names..."

Duskfur gulped. "O-okay." This is so awkward. He dipped his head, and gently began licking the little golden tom. He seems weaker than the other two... I hope he's okay. Should I tell Emberlight or Quietshadow? "Uhh, names?" He asked quickly, trying to take his mind off the kit's state. He'd never been good with names. Well, this one's little and fragile, like... He looked around him. A blade of grass? Bladekit? No... Grasskit sounds better. And I guess his stripes look like grass, too... He nudged the tom carefully. "Grasskit for this one? I dunno," He murmured, and began to lick the tortoiseshell. Great, now the whole clan's gonna know I'm the father. How many tortoiseshell toms do you... He stopped himself, and moved on to the tabby she-cat. Why was he so reluctant? He should feel happy to have kits - not nervous and awkward.

Emberlight nodded, noticing Grasskit's attempts to get in between his two sisters was futile. He was very weak. Did anyone else notice it? "I like Grasskit." She looked at the tortoiseshell she-kit. Hmm... Her pelt kind of ripples like water.. Maybe Ripplekit? "What about Ripplekit for the tortoiseshell?" And lastly, she looked at the golden tabby she-kit. And you...what will your name be? What does her pelt look like? Like gold, a spark of light... What does Duskfur think? "What about her? What do you think we should name her?"

"I dunno," Duskfur meowed nervously. "Uhh... she looks like you. Heh. You decide... I can't think right now." He watched Grasskit anxiously, fears about the kit beginning to stir within him once more. "And, yeah... Ripplekit sounds good for the tortoiseshell."

Emberlight thought for a moment. "What about Sparkkit? Like a spark of fire?" She looked down at her kits again. She nudged Grasskit closer to her stomach. "Aren't they beautiful?" She looked up at Quietshadow and Icestar happily.
OOC: By the way, Grasskit will be dying *AW! I know* But Loaym and I agreed we should keep the number of kits small so their wouldn't be "over population"

Quietshadow nodded and took a step closer to the kits. "Grasskit seems a bit...off." He leaned his head down and stared intently at the kit. "Emberlight, does he feel any colder or otherwise different than the other kits?"

Larchpaw padded into the nursery, wondering if Quietshadow was in there. He sat next to him "Can I help?" He asked, being bored of sitting and sorting herbs all day. "The kits are so tiny!" He marvaled at the kits."And beautiful" He murmered softly

"Yes. Even though there's nothing for us to do right now, there seems to be something wrong with Grasskit. He's the golden tabby with dark splotches." Quietshadow blinked and continued his observation of the kit.
ooc: Grasskit is the golden tabby, right?

OOC: No, Sparkkit's the golden tabby. Grasskit is the golden tabby with darker splotches.
Emberlight breathed a sigh of relief that someone else had noticed. "He's attempts to get through his sisters are weak. Will he be alright?" She turned anxiously to her mate.

"O-Okay. Sparkkit, then," Duskfur meowed. He sprang to his paws as he heard another cat enter the nursery, but relaxed when he saw who it was. Just the medicine cat apprentice. Maybe he can help us with Grasskit. He glanced down at the patchy golden tabby, his body almost rigid. It's not just his attempts to get between the other two. He can barely stand up... "Um. Yeah. Don't worry, Emberlight," He muttered, his voice shaking. Don't worry? Well that's only the most mouse-brained thing I could ever say. For StarClan's sake, look who's talking!

"Start licking his fur the wrong way," Quietshadow ordered. "It'll help get his blood flowing. And you'll need to make sure he's able to nurse. Other than that, there's not much to do. He's still too small to eat any herbs."
ooc: Okay, I changed it. ^^;

Emberlight began licking frantically at the fur, messing up the glossy sheen. After a number of moments, she stopped, looking up miserably. "It's not working! His heartbeat's getting weaker!"

Quietshadow frowned. "Okay then, roll him on his side and lick the fur on his chest; near his heart. Like I said, there's not a lot to do apart from that." He crouched down and tucked his paws under his chest, intently watching Emberlight's attempts to get her son's heart rate up to normal.

Emberlight began licking her son's chest, his heartbeat still weak. Why? she wailed to herself, Why are you trying to take my son so soon? She groomed his chest rapidly, but it was no use. The golden tabby sighed, leaning back against her mate. "It's no use." She put her head in her paws mournfully, watching as the splotchy tabby kit tried to squirm closer to his mother's stomach.

No... please... Duskfur wanted to lick the little kit too, but couldn't stand the thought of hurting him. "H-his heartbeat's getting weaker?" he said softly, and felt his own heart beat even faster. He squeezed his eyes shut, his whole body shaking with anxiety. As Emberlight leaned closer, he swallowed. Seeing a kit dying like this only brought back memories... memories of a tiny tan-and-white kit he didn't want to remember. But this one might still be saved... Oh, trying to convince myself is useless. It looks like there's nothing that can be done. Unlike last time, added a voice in his head.

Quietshadow sighed heavily. "Sometimes they can't be saved," he meowed quietly to himself. "The best you can do is keep him warm and keep licking him. Duskfur, go help." The medicine cat peered over at the other kits. "As far as I can tell, his sisters are both perfectly healthy."

Emberlight sighed, defeated. Grasskit's dying and it's all my fault. I'm already a horrible mother... She didn't dare say her thoughts out loud, fearing they'd deny it to make her feel better. Please StarClan, don't take my kit! She nudged Sparkkit and Ripplekit closer, Grasskit squeezing in between them feebly. "Will milk help him? Will it make him strong enough to survive?"
|

|
Post by Tiger on Jul 26, 2008 13:07:59 GMT -5
"It probably will," Quietshadow meowed. "The main cause of kit fatilities is because they don't get enough--or any--of their mother's milk. Often this is caused because the kits are too weak to suckle."
