Rainwing nodded. "That's a lovely idea. Let's go to the grasses." She looked over to where Lighteningpaw and Maplepaw were training. "We'll go over here," she said, motioning with her head toward the left. "I had the same problem when I was an apprentice. I was the smallest one." She laughed. "When I told my brother the stories, he laughed at me."

Firepaw nodded and quickly bent down. She gripped Applesong's paw and slowly pulled her out. "Are you sure you're okay? I mean, I can go get Swiftwind, if you want." she meowed, sighing at the end. She stared at her mentor, worry in her eyes.

Lightningpaw scowled, rolling his eyes. "I won't get stuck." he said, playfully pouting as she teased him. His fur tingled as she brushed against him, his senses overflowing with her sweet scent. He gazed after her as she took off, the expression on his face slightly dreamy and out of it. Then he snapped out of it, following her but more slowly to give her time to hide and so he wouldn't get stuck in the mud. That was the last thing he wanted to happen.

Spottedfrost sighed. Now that Lightningpaw was off training with Maplepaw, she had no reason to be here. The only reason she could find for why she was still standing there, alone, was that she didn't have the energy to keep moving and go back to camp. She needed strength. She didn't need the strength for her - she could care less about herself - but she needed it for Lightningpaw. He deserved the best mentor he could get, and she felt like a failure for she could not measure up to what she once was. Before the badger attack, she would've known that she was a good mentor for him; a nice hunter, a good fighter, a talented tracker. But now, all she could smell was Wolfheart's blood mixed with the badgers blood. All she could see was the badger, looming over Wolfheart and her. And all she could fight were the battles raging in her head to keep her sanity and to keep her alive.
She needed to work for Lightningpaw. He deserved more, but he got the worst.

"You seem really bummed today," Applesong meowed, turning to look at Spottedfrost once she was up on the ground. She turned to Firepaw with a smile, but then gazed at Spottedfrost. "I mean...seriously..."

Firepaw sighed in relief. Her mentor was okay. "Can we practice fighting now?" she asked, flashing a smile at Applesong. The apprentice was happy again, now that she was back on track. "Please?"

"Huh? Oh, sure!" Applesong exclaimed happily. "Now, one of my personal favorite ways to attack someone is by crouching low, in the grass... She crouched down low, indicated with her up-right tail that there was imaginary tall grass around her. "When their back is faced to you and they're standing up, you run towards them, crouched, and slide underneath your belly! Then, you scratch them right then and there!" She slid through the grass, scraping the claws of an imaginary enemy's belly.

Littlepaw wondered if his father had made Rainwing his mentor with that fact purposely in mind. The white tom smiled at her, visibly brightened that he wasn't alone. "Who's your brother?" he asked," I bet he's not as annoying as mine." He kicked up his paws and trotted off towards the grasses, his face still towards Rainwing as he waited for her reply.
As soon as she was out of sight, Maplepaw wiggled her way into the grasses where the water hid underneath. Careful not to get stuck herself -that would be ironic!- she rolled amongst it in an attempt to camouflage her scent. Once that was done she leapt from each lump of grass until she found one large enough to hide herself in. He won't ever fine me!
{This is based off the 'swamp' we had to walk through at camp. I, of course, decided to run instead of stepping purposefully on the grasses and ended up face first on the ground when my whole leg suddenly sunk into the ground xD It looks solid but it's not}

Rainwing sighed. "It's rather a long story. And you're probably right. Brackenstripe is the best brother a cat could ask for. I'm sure it would be different if I was a tom, but I'm not." She shook her head, ridding herself of thoughts of her brother. "But let's focus on battle training."
[ooc;] I am totally lost in how to teach Littlepaw how to battle train with his size mind. Help?[/ooc]

Lightningpaw moved swiftly through the grass, his pawsteps hardly heard. He was fast and he was very light on his feet. His ears twitched at every sound and he would quickly identify them as either a bird, the trees, or some bug. No sign of Maplepaw yet...He looked around, green eyes scanning the area. Every sense was alert and ready as he moved through the grass.

Firepaw looked confused. "Uhh..okay," she grumbled. "Can I try it on you, Applesong? I promise I won't use my claws!" She started crouching on the ground, copying Applesong's movements. She smiled to no one in particular, and looked at Applesong.

"Of course you can, Firepaw!" Applesong exclaimed, turning around so that she wasn't facing Firepaw. She pretended to be batting another (yet imaginary) cat. "Now, pretend that this is one of your loved ones," Applesong meowed. "You only have a few quick movements to save them! And...go!"

{Um, how about using his smaller body to slip under or past enemy attacks?}
Littlepaw smiled sadly at Rainwing. He knew that there wasn't a Brackenstripe in RainClan in anymore so the only conclusion he could draw was that he had died. "I wish I could say the same about my brothers!" he meowed. "Heronpaw and Lightningpaw are such a nuisance. Lightningpaw was always fighting with Heronpaw because he was fighting with me..." He sighed and watched as the slim black and white figure vanished into the grasses. "At least Heronpaw is bothering him and Maplepaw now," he added softly.
Maplepaw tucked her ginger and white paws against her chest and curled her tail around her body. With her nose, she gently parted the grasses around her so she could peer out from her hiding space. The apprentice could just make out a black body weaving through the grasses. Maplepaw grinned. This will be fun...

Firepaw grinned at Applesong. "Okay." She ran up behind Applesong, and slid underneath her mentor's belly. She prodded Applesong's belly with one paw. She slowly got up from underneath her mentor's belly and grinned at her. "Was that good?"

"Absolutely excellent, Firepaw," Applesong purred, turning around to look at her apprentice. "You always need to make sure your claws are sharp before doing that particular move. You've just gotta" - Applesong's claws slowly emerged out of her paws, and she arched her back - "get into it, that's all!"

Rainwing laughed. "You wouldn't say that if you were to lose them. Or something along those lines. Your brothers are your family. Sure, the Clan is one big family, but your brothers are your blood; what runs in your veins runs in theirs. In a way, you are linked beyond the link between Clanmates. In a way, you guys are one. The bond between family cannot be broken, regardless of your feelings for them or whether something pulls you apart. Remember that." She shook her head. Back to business.
"OK. Your biggest advantage, in a way, is your size. Imagine a large cat, two times your size, attacking you. Do you think they would be able to get to your belly if you stayed on your feet? Smaller size is an advantage. You can slip right under them, and, as long as you're quiet, you can get by unseen. It's not true that larger cats are louder than others, but with less body mass..." She trailed off, hoping Littlepaw saw where she was going with this. "So...you could use a simple, yet effective move that can help in all types of situations involving other cats."

Lightningpaw felt the wind change suddenly and his nose caught Maplepaw's scent if only for a moment before it was gone. But it was enough for him to get a good idea to where she was. He smiled to himself, deciding to play a little trick on her. He quickly disappeared behind a tree and ran a few yards to make it sound like he had gone before circling back around, watching his steps as to not make any noise that would bring attention to himself as he snuck up behind her hiding place.

Firepaw held her head high. She looked at Applesong. "Yes, Applesong." She unsheathed her claws and arched her back like Applesong, and then sheathed her claws again. She looked up at Applesong, her eyes wide with excitement.

"The key to a good attack is, of course, making sure your opponent isn't expecting it. Or, make them expect you're going to make one move, but then you make another one, totally catching them off guard," Applesong explained, padding along the edge of the grassy shore. "You could pretend to be jumping on their back, but then you hit the ground and slide under their belly. Do you get what I mean?"

Frankly, Littlepaw felt that what Rainwing had said did not entirely apply to him. If he were to loose his father, Hawkstar, or his mother, Orchidtail, he would be crushed. He would grief their loss as they were the only cats in his 'family' who cared for him. Out of his siblings he would only miss his sister as together, they lived through Heronpaw's constant taunting. He mentally shook the thoughts from his head and turned his attention to the matter at hand.
As Rainwing spoke, Littlepaw stood with his ears perked forward and his eyes blazing with determination. He nodded when she finished and smiled. "That makes sense! So attacks like this-" he crouched down in the mud before his mentor and swiped at her lower chest "-would be more effective?"
Where is he going? Maplepaw stared in surprise as Lightningpaw ran past her. She was unaware that the wind had changed briefly and even more unaware of his trick. Her fur bristled slightly in annoyance at having to chase after him. However...I can follow him and catch him by surprise! She half-rose from her hiding place, the grasses rustling softly around her. A pair of red-brown ears broke through the grass, revealing her exact location. Maplepaw felt no need to stay hidden as Lightningpaw had long since passed. She wasn't to know that the younger apprentice was going to surprise her.

Rainwing beamed at him. "Yes, exactly like that. That's absolutely perfect." She smiled at him again, before going through the moves she used in battles when she was an apprentice. "One thing you never want to do is face a larger opponent head-on. I learned from experience. I always go at them from above, below, or from the sides. Trying to beat them face-to-face is extremely difficult and irresponsible. Understood?"

Littlepaw nodded in understanding as he watched Rainwing move. Heronpaw always defeated him by pinning him down on the ground. If he were to attack from the sides and keep moving he could easily overcome his brother! The mud-splattered tom smiled and circled around his mentor, swiping a sheathed paw over her shoulders. "Better?" he asked.

Rainwing nodded, smiling. "Yes. And use agility as an ally. You don't want your opponent to know what's coming for them. Never let your eyes betray where you're going to strike."

Gotcha! Lightningpaw smiled in satisfactory as his plan worked perfectly. She had no idea that he was sneaking up on her instead. Slowly stalking her from behind, he kept low to the ground without a sound. "Oooh, Maplepaw...." With this comment, he pounced as soon as her ears appeared and the two went tumblingl ending up with him pinning her with a large grin on his face. "Found you!"

Littlepaw grinned happily and sat down, curling his tail over his paws. "Thank-you! That's really useful. I wish I was a better fighter," he meowed. He longed for the day where he could beat his brother in a fight and show him he wasn't a timid little mouse. He might not have Lightningpaw's speed or Heronpaw's strength but he was sure that there was something that made him a good warrior. There just had to be!
Maplepaw's ears perked up at his voice but before she had the chance to face him, Lightningpaw pounced and sent her tumbling into the grass. It took her by surprise and for a brief moment she really thought she was under attack. The scent that clung to the black and white fur around her filled her nose and mind, and she stopped struggling and calmed her thumping heart as Lightningpaw pinned her down on her back. Maplepaw returned his large grin, folding her mud drenched paws against her chest. "You tricked me!" she cried, although she wasn't particulary offended," You surprised me! I thought you were a rogue or a fox cub!" She was more ashamed that in the brief moment that she had thought he was a rogue or a fox-cub, she was ready to harm or even kill him. Looking into his deep green eyes- like leaves in green-leaf -Maplepaw couldn't help but feel guilty at the mere thought.

"Littlepaw, I figure you'll make a good warrior for the Clan someday," Applesong purred, tapping Littlepaw on the head with her tail. "You certainly have the determination to..." Her voice trailed off as she looked at Firepaw, her eyes glittering.
"Should we try some more battle training?"

Lightningpaw grinned, showing his teeth. "Am I really that ferocious? Sorry to scare you." His voice was teasing and playful, his eyes dancing at the chance that he won as his nose was inches from hers. "You thought I was just going to let you sneak up on me like I'm some new apprentice, pssht." he said, tail twitching back and forth with amuesment. He slowly backed off her, sitting down and looking at her with pride.

Rainwing smiled fondly at her apprentice. "Littlepaw, you can be whatever you want to be. All you have to do is work for it. Work hard, train hard, and do what you can for the Clan, and you'll be one of the best warriors RainClan has ever known." She smiled again. She believed every word she had said to Littlepaw. He would be one of the best. All he really had to do was realize just because he was little didn't mean that he couldn't fight well.
Spottedfrost sighed, her shoulders slumping. Nobody was ready to leave. She was alone. Lighteningpaw was off training with Maplepaw, Littlepaw was off training with Rainwing, and Firepaw was off training with Applesong. She had no idea where Wolfheart was. Sighing again, she thought of Wolfheart. Wolfheart, who had helped her through so much, who had been her friend, who could have been more. She ruined it all. He didn't like her anymore. Not wasted away as she was. How could anybody? What would her mother think? She'd probably laugh, and say 'I told you so,' Spottedfrost thought bitterly. The chocolate brown she-cat sighed for the third time, looking at her paws. She was going to have to get back to camp on her own.

Wolfheart quickly popped up beside Spottedfrost, holding two pieces of fresh-kill in his mouth. He placed the two mice at her feet, smiling up to her. "Sorry to disappear, but I figured you might be getting hungry. Is this okay?" He nudged the mouse closer to her, smile still lighting up his face. He could tell she had been thinking and by the expression on her face, it didn't look like she was happy. He would do anything to change that.

Maplepaw knew, as she rolled onto her stomach and sat up before Lightningpaw, that she was a complete mess. Her fur was sticking up in sharp tufts where the mud had dried or had been ruffled from her tumble with the apprentice. A soft purr rumbled in her chest and burst from her throat in a merry chuckle. He looked so pleased with himself. It was as if he had caught the biggest piece of prey in the all the Clans rather than a muddy she-cat hiding in the grasses. "You fooled me, mighty apprentice," she meowed, a smile playing on her lips. "You were so ferocious you would of had a badger running. Very good Lightningpaw."
Littlepaw ducked away from Applesong but he couldn't stop the grin that was spreading across his face. His green eyes shimmered like dew covered grass at the she-cats' words. Rainwing and Applesong believed in him! All Heronpaw had ever done was bring him down and his mother always whispered in his ear,"I'll love you no matter what." But his mentor was telling him he could be so much more! The apprentice looked up at her, a soft (and rare) purr rumbling in his chest. "I'll work harder than any cat," he told her.
