Dawnwhisker tip-toed into the nursery to check on Orchidtail. All was quiet. The Clan was anxiously awaiting the birth of these kits. Orchidtail appeared to be sleeping, and Dawnwhisker didn't want to wake her. She would need any sleep she could get now.
Dawnwhisker left the nursery as quietly as she had come in and saw Hawkstar near the fresh-kill pile. She padded over and asked him to let her know right away if Orchidtail needed anything. Her stomach reminded her that she hadn't eaten in hours. She grabbed a couple of mice for herself and Sootpaw and headed back to the medicine den.

Hawkstar nodded to Dawnwhisker, then turned back to the nursery. He was exhausted, but he wanted to see these kits and his mate. He padded into the nursery, his eyes softening and his face lighting up when he saw Orchidtail. He quietly made his way to her, licking her ear gently as to not wake her. Then he lay down, curling his tail over his paws, a little bit from her. He didn't mean to fall asleep, but in a few minutes he was unconscious, sleeping peacefully.

ooc:// Do we have apps up for all her kits? Because she should have them soon.
bic:// Hawkstar's scent was a pleasant thing to wake to. She wondered when he had came in. Sometime after Wolfheart's and Spottedfrost's return no doubt. She felt guilty that she had fallen alseep when her clan mates were at danger of loosing there lives. Sleepily, she blinked her green eyes and rested her muzzle against Hawkstar's side. She could only wish for more moments like this. It wouldn't be long now until she would be caring for her kits. Their kits. She sighed happily.

It was very early the next morning. Dawnwhisker yawned sleepily as she awoke all cozy in her nest. "I think the kits might be born soon," she mewed to herself. Without disturbing Sootpaw, Wolfheart, and Spottedfrost, she padded over to the nursery with a mouse she picked up at the fresh-kill pile in her jaws. She dropped it in front of Orchidtail. "You might want something to eat before the birth of your kits." Dawnwhisker smiled, hoping that she had pleased the young queen. "Hawkstar, could I get you something to eat or are you fine?"

Hawkstar yawned and blinked sleepily, but shook his head. "No, I'm good. I'll get something to eat later. Besides, you'll have your paws full soon." he said warmly, getting to his feet and shaking his fur, stretching his sore muscles. He looked to his sleeping mate, his eyes soft and light. They were only that way when he looked at Spottedfrost, though his eyes were kind to other cats, these were different. "Is she expecting soon?" he asked Dawnwhisker quietly, looking up curiously, if not a little worried.

"Thanks Dawnwhisker," Orchidtail meowed, stirring from her light sleep. She nibbled at the mouse with fake enthusiasm . The pregnant queen didn't feel very hungry. She was about to take a larger bite when a wave of pain rippled through her body. She gasped and and cringed. Eyes scrunched, she fell onto her side. "Hawkstar!" she gasped.

Hawkstar was instantly at Orchidtail's side, right beside her head. He dipped his head so that his muzzle was on her cheek. "Orchidtail, it's going to be okay. I promise, I'm right here." he said quietly and reassuringly. He looked up to Dawnwhisker, his blue eyes panicked. "Dawnwhisker..."

Sootpaw opened her eyes, and was rather surprised to see that Dawnwhisker's bed was empty. She blinked wearily, slightly confused for but a moment before remembering the events of the previous night. Quickly, she scurried from her bed to make sure that Spottedfrost and Wolfheart were doing okay. Orchidtail! Was she having her kits? She dashed from the medicine cat den, making for the nursery. Upon seeing Dwanwhisker there, her fur prickled. "Dawnwhisker! Is everything okay in there?"

Dawnwhisker gasped, her eyes wide open. But, she quickly regained her composure. "It will be alright," she whispered to Orchidtail. The kits! They'll be born soon. I must try to keep Orchidtail calm. She nuzzled Orchidtail. "Don't worry. Your beautiful kits will be here soon. Just try to think about them. Stay calm, think about your beautiful kits..." She smiled and turned to Sootpaw. "Everything is fine here. Orchidtail's kits have announced they're coming!" she answered the young she-cat. "Could you bring us some thyme leaves and water-soaked moss?"

Desertflower, who had been lying awake in her nest, quickly rose as she heard the hushed voices outside the den. Orchidtail! She stepped over the sleeping bodies of the warriors and rushed over to Nursery. "Dawnwhisker? Orchidtail?" she called. She ginger she-cat was worried for the young queen. No kits had been born since Woodpaw, and his parents had been killed on Thunderfoot's patrol...
Orchidtail closed her eyes, listening to the cat's gentle voices. She could feel their muzzles against hers. Another wave of pain swept through and she cringed again. Ever time her body convulsed she thought that for sure she was dying. She tried to calm her breathing, imagining her beautiful kits like Dawnwhisker had told her too. Before Sootpaw could return Orchidtail gave birth to her first kit, a grey tabby tom. She licked him weakly before collapsing again, the next kit arriving.

"Oh!" Sootpaw meowed excitedly, when she heard the news. "I'll be right back, then!" She headed for the storage den, rummaging through the shelves there until she caught the scent of thyme. With the leaves in her jaws, she padded back to the nursery, her eyes widening as she saw the first kits arriving. Dropping the leaves at Dawnwhisker's feet, she looked up at her mentor. "Should - should I wait here for the kitting?" she whispered. "Or should I go back to get the water?"

"Please go back and get some water-soaked moss, Sootpaw," Dawnwhisker meowed. She took a close look at the little gray kit lying next to Orchidtail. "What shall you call him?" she asked the white queen. Dawnwhisker flicked her tail and nuzzled Orchidtail's belly gently, hoping to nudge the next kit out. "Hurry, now," she said to Sootpaw, "then you can see the rest of the kits as they come."

"Oh, okay," Sootpaw meowed, a little disappointed that she couldn't watch the kits the entire time. As a medicine cat, she reminded herself, I do what needs to be done - not what I want to do. She turned from the nursery, beginning to shift back to the medicine cat den, but stopped herself halfway there. I need fresh moss - from the forest. She wondered why she was so befuddled today - maybe she was tired. She was making her way toward the camp entrance, when something crashed into her, barreling her over. "Oh... Sootpaw! I didn't see you! I'm sorry! I-" "Woodpaw?" Sootpaw quickly pulled herself back up, blinking in surprise as she glanced at the tan apprentice. She had no clue what he was doing awake at this time, seen as how he normally slept like a log, but she had no time to find out. "Sorry, but I'm in a hurry right now. See you!" She began to scramble away.
"Sootpaw, wait! I-" Woodpaw began, but the medicine cat apprentice was already gone. He gritted his teeth, looking at his paws - particularly his right one, which had swollen to what seemed like twice its normal size. He'd slept for a little while, but had awoken soon after to feel a surging pain in his foot, and hadn't been able to get back to sleep. He'd limped from the apprentices den, planning to head over to see if Dawnwhisker was awake, before colliding with Sootpaw. But... if Dawnwhisker's apprentice was busy, chances were she was busy as well. Maybe he could peek into the medicine cat den, though - just to see exactly what she was doing. After painfully making his way over, however, the only cats he found there were Spottedfrost and Wolfheart - both still asleep. Not wanting to wake them, he resorted to waiting outside the den.
Sootpaw gently pulled a pillow of moss from the forest floor, and shook off the earth. She was sure there was at least a small stream nearby, trickling down from the mountains - she'd visited it for water before. Ah, here it is. She pulled the moss over, dipping it into the water and allowing it to soak for a moment, then rolled it into a wad as best she could. She hurried back to camp, holding the dripping bundle between her jaws, hoping to StarClan that she hadn't missed everything. "I've got it!" she called as she arrived at the entrance to the den, though it sounded more like 'Ebve gbt embt!' through her mouthful of wet moss.

Dawnwhisker saw Sootpaw coming towards her with a mouthful of wet moss. "Thank you," she mewed. "Come in and watch the kits. You might as well want to take a look at this little gray one right there. I wonder what Orchidtail will name him."

Hawkstar smiled, seeing the little tiny kit, but afraid to go near it. He didn't want to hurt it. He licked Orchidtail's forehead tenderly, purring roughly. "You're doing good, I'm right here, I'm right with you." he murmured affectionately. Then he nuzzled her cheek, closing his eyes. "I love you Orchidtail."

"Heronkit," she gasped. She remembered the day that she had first seen the long grey birds in the Marsh. Strong, graceful and magestic in flight. "Hawkstar," Desertflower commanded," You must start licking the kit. Make sure his mouth is clear and that he's warm." She gestured with her head for Sootpaw to help. The apprentice was smaller and would be able to crouch beside Orchidtail. The second kit was a black and white tom. The white queen did what Desertflower had asked and began licking him. Sure that he was okay she pushed him towards his stomach. She smiled at the odd shaped patch over his face. Another wave of pain passed through her and she raised her head so she could look into Hawkstar's eyes. "I love you too," she murmured weakly. The third kit was beautiful golden tabby. Orchidtail's first she-cat. The golden tabby was followed by another she-cat. This time, brown. This kit was smaller than her sister and diffently not as big as Heronkit and the other tom. At first she thought this was the runt of the litter, the last born, but she was wrong. There was one more kit to come.

Hawkstar nodded nervously to Desertflower. He knew about hunting and leading a clan, but when it came to kits and such....well, it was like he was a new apprentice. He moved towards the kit Orchidtail had named Heronkit, licking him to make sure he was warm and able to breathe. When he believed he had done as he was asked, he pushed the kit towards the other at Orchidtail's stomach before helping with the two she-cats. "They're beautiful Orchidtail." he breathed, looking around the litter. Two toms and two she-cats. Was that it?

Dawnwhisker stayed back while the new family got to know each other. Hawkstar and Orchidtail were handling things just fine, and Orchidtail's good friend Desertflower was there to offer help. Dawnwhisker knew she, as the medicine cat, was there "just in case" something went amiss. She was grateful that Desertflower was including Sootpaw; the experience was invaluable for the medicine cat apprentice.

Sootpaw's eyes widened as Desertflower gestured for her to come over, and padded forward, tingling with excitement. Slowly, she crouched down near the queen and began covering the kits in gentle licks, beginning with the smallest and moving up to the bigger ones. "Congratulations," she purred, not entirely sure what to say.

"Psst," Applesong hissed to Dawnwhisker from just inside the nursery. Applesong was very uncomfortable with the odd scents and sounds coming from inside the nursery. Luckily, she caught Dawnwhisker's attention without having to go further into the nursery. Dawnwhisker padded over to the entrance and asked what was up. Applesong explained about Woodpaw's injury. "Oh dear," sighed Dawnwhisker. "That sounds serious, poor little guy must really be in pain. Applesong, can you stay here at the nursery entrance while I go tend to Woodpaw? Orchidtail is doing a fine job kitting, but I need you to come get me if anything goes wrong." Before Applesong had a chance to refuse (and, really, how could she?), Dawnwhisker said a quick thanks as she scurried back to the medicine den.

The ginger queen was pleased at how well Sootpaw and Hakwstar were dealing with the situation. Orchidtail was doing even better. Desertflower smiled down at the white she-cat. "You've done very well. Four's a nice -" She stopped talking when Orchidtail gasped softly. She had just given birth to a fith kit. A small white tom. He was so tiny, a little larger than the average mouse. Desertflower quickly nudged him towards Orchidtail's stomach, pushing him in between the others. Orchidtail bent her head around to begin licking him. "He's so tiny," she meowed softly," I don't know if he's breathing..." Desertflower grimaced. The other kits were squirming and jostling about at their mother's side but the little white tom wasn't. "Sootpaw. Start licking him roughly until he starts mewling. I better go fetch Dawnwhisker." "Hawkstar...," Orchidtail whispered.

Hawkstar turned, his attention caught by Desertflower's gasp of surprise. Another kit? His blue eyes caught sight of the small kit, thinking how small it was..He licked the kit gently, before looking up into Orchidtail's eyes. "It'll be okay, he'll be okay..." he reassured her, thought he wasn't sure himself. He was the smallest of the toms and the smallest of the whole litter.

Sootpaw's eyes widened as the fifth kit emerged. "Dawnwhisker..." she whispered, glancing toward the nursery entrance, but she knew what she had to do. Closing her eyes for a second, she let herself relax, and stepped forward, moving around next to Hawkstar and crouching next to the little white tom. She began to lick him in a hard but deliberate manner - this would have to be done to warm him and get his blood flowing.

Orchidtail nodded at her mate and busied herself with licking the other kits. "Sootpaw, is he okay?" she asked. Her green eyes were wide with concern for her smallest kit. The white tom croaked and squirmed uncomfortably. Something was licking his back roughly, making him lull to one side. His mother's sweet scent washed over him and he cried out weakly to her.

Hawkstar gave a small smile to Sootpaw, letting her take over. "Thank you Sootpaw. He said gratefully, his ears perking at the kits cries. "I think he'll be just fine." he said with a sigh of relief, sitting down beside his mate and licking her between the ears before looking at the kits. "Okay, so we have Heronkit, what about the others names?"

Orchidtail managed a weak purr. "The brown tabby can be Goldenkit," she rumbled," She looks like the golden leaves in leaf-fall." She smiled at the small she-cat and licked her gently. "You can name them too," she meowed, tilting her head so she could look at Hawkstar. "Don't let be an over controlling mother just yet!" she laughed.

Hawkstar chuckled, looking to Goldenkit. The name fit well. His gaze then turned to the other tom, the black and white one. With an unusual mark on his face. He grinned, nudging the kit slightly, causing him to topple over slightly on his long and unsteady legs. He seemed leaner and more long limbed than his siblings. He puffed out his chest, pretending to show off. "It seems this kit took after one handsome tom, I wonder who..." he joked, then looked to the kit's marking. "Well how about that...let's call him Lightningkit. For that mark over his eye and his long legs, which are sure to make him fast as lightning." He said proudly, purring slightly.

Orchidtail studied the little tom. the marking did look like a lighting bolt. "Lightningkit," she meowed, trying to see how it sounded. It fitted him like a glove. She stared fondly at the black and white kit. She could almost see Hawkstar in him. She turned to the last two kits; the brown she-cat and the white tom. "The white kit takes after me obviously," she purred," He's so little though." Her eyes widened as she realised what to name him. "Littlekit!"
