The cold winter winds had ravaged the barn, chilling the AquaClan warriors inside. Even though the snow had finally melted weeks before, frost continued to settle and rain continued to fall. Prey was hard to find and many of the cats bore signs of starvation and even illness. It seemed StarClan had turned a blind eye to them in their time of need and even their own leader appeared to have given up. Still, life went on. Kits were apprenticed and friendships were made between the Clan and the rogues and loners that chose to help. Of course, many rogues were unhappy about the appearance of such a large group of cats but, with a few snarls and a glimpse of the warriors' powerful muscles, they chose to leave the cats alone.
The lean tabby Faunus, patrolled the edge of the barn, eager for adventure. The constant atmosphere of despair that hung over the cats was beginning to affect him and he wished to run to the gardens of the twolegplace where he could chase plump sparrows and tell stories to the lazy kittypets. He sighed sadly, crouching down in the wet grass. It was never going to happen.
Spider's long black body was stretched across the floorboards as he lay on his side. His ribs were faintly visible under his black fur but he managed to hold onto his cheery attitude as he flicked his tail cheerfully. Everytime he caught a skinny mouse or shivered in the freezing wind, he would remind himself that it could be alot worse.
{ Bring out those AquaClan cats! Time is nearly a month after the fire and after the medicine cat meeting. They are unaware that BeachClan is about to invade FrostClan. Owlspot, Redwind and their kits are still in BeachClan. Flaxeyes, the queen who suckled Shadowsoul's kits, also remains in BeachClan. Also, I believe Shadowsoul's kits are now apprentices. Feel free to have killed off characters in the cold weather!}

"It's freezing in here!" It was Rainpaw who made the irritating yowls. "We should have never have moved. The Twolegs had planted new growth and we should've just stayed, but noooo we had to come here!" "Calm down." Twilightpaw meowed in a soft voice. "You'll wake people up." "Like who?" "Ummm let me think.... Shadowsoul?!" Twilightpaw was getting unpaitent with her sister. Rainpaw got up a stretched. As she ignored her sister she started to walk away. The grey tabby walked over to a broken window. She jumped right through. "Hey watch it!" A brown tabby snarled. "Ah!" Rainpaw seemed frightened. "Sorry." The tabby turned his face. It was Browntail. His one, brown blinked. Browntail let out a loud cough. "What are you doing out here?" Rainpaw meowed, shaking snow from her back. Even though newleaf was able to hit, it was still snowing, and it was hard against the clan. Browntail looked at Rainpaw with a sad face. "Hunting for the elders, Redfoot is about to die." Rainpaw opened her mouth to respond, but she couldn't say anything.

Snowfur sat there in the frost covered grass. He stared up at the sky, his sky blue eyes giving of an icy glare. The sky was a cool gray, how surprising. He sighed and looked out across the grass. There's the barn. That stupid old barn. From his distance he had to squint to see who was in front of it. Faunus crouched in the grass off to the side and there was Rainpaw and Browntail chatting. His empty stomach suddenly came into existence. I hate this so much. He looked around and scented the air for any chance of prey. Of course, if he did find anything he'd take it to someone who was starving even more than him, someone who was just about to die. His eyes suddenly caught a small flash of gray in the distance. Mouse! He crouched and started stalking. When he was only a few feet away he leaped and landed on the scrawny little thing, killing it with his sudden weight. He picked it up in his mouth and padded over to the barn.

The sound of pawsteps was heard as a thin, small tom padded into the barn. His sides showed ribs and his pelt had lost it's normal shine of a well groomed and well fed cat, but in his jaws were two birds and a rabbit. The largest of this prey was the rabbit and it was medium at best. He slowly placed it down in the meager fresh-kill pile, then shook his body to regain some warmth in his joints, every muscle and bone showing. This was Stormstrike, almost looking like an elder himself instead of the young warrior he was. Sighing, he made his way over to a small patch of straw and laid down, closing his eyes yet his ears remained alert.

Browntail sniffed the air. His mouth opended to drink in the air. He sented a little bit of prey around him. He stalked off into the undergrowth to find prey. The brown tom noticed a squirrel, searching through debris. Browntail crouched into the hunting stance and started to kreep forward. Paws soft as clouds, kreep slowly and-he let out a yowl as he jumped into the air. The squirrel flinched but wasn't fast enough to escape from Browntail's paws. He shoved his claws into the prey's neck to let it lay limp on the floor. He kicked a pile of snow ontop of it quickly. "That looks fun!" Rainpaw meowed. Browntail flinched. I didn't know she was watching! "Can ya teach me! Teach me!" Rainpaw burst. Browntail didn't know what to say. "You... You.. You have to get your mentor to do it!" He studdered. He didn't like saying no, but it wasn't his job to teach. He wasn't a mentor.

Spider lifted his head slowly from the floor, watching Stormstrike's progress. The freshkill hanging from the warrior's jaws made his stomach rumble but he knew he wouldn't get a mouthful of the tender flesh. It was Clan food. The fresh scent wafted over him and he watched it longingly as it sat there untouched. Surely someone was going to eat it? It was getting cold. Everything about the this place was cold. "There's freshkill here," he called out. "Elders and apprentices first right?"

"Fresh-kill?" a small voice asked. The voice belonged to Quailpaw, a small, light gray apprentice with pale white tabby stripes and four white paws. "Apprentices first, right? I haven't eaten for a while..." Her long pelt hung limply off her thin frame; her pale blue eyes seemed rather pitiful and sad. Quietly, she wandered over to the fresh-kill pile and plucked a small mouse from the top before padding over to a hay bale and eating while perched on top of it.
Nightshade, on the other hand (paw?), was looking sleek and as well-fed as ever. She was now a natural at catching mice, thanks to the skillful tutelage of her mate, Spider, and was living quite the splendid life despite the fact that it was shared with well over fifteen other cats. The rogue was napping in the sun, with her white paws stretched out in front of her and her tail resting on the straw-strewn floor. It was not a deep sleep; more of a (ha, ha) catnap from which she could be easily awaken.
The gruff deputy of AquaClan--a tortoiseshell named Rockfang--was also looking thinner and more weary than usual, but the ever-present steely glint in her yellow eyes was no less formidable. She was hungry but did not want to eat at the moment due to the fact that she was busy thinking. What would happen to the clan? Would they ever be able to return to their burnt-out territory, or would they spend the rest of eternity crammed in this barn? Of course, there was always the possibility that they would all starve and not live to see their home recover sufficiently to sustain life. Rockfang didn't want to think about that option, though.

Rainpaw ignored Browntail and noticed Rockfang. This is my chance! "Hey! Rockfang!" She yowled. She pranced over to her worn out mentor and looked her straight in the eyes. "Can you teach me to hunt and fight now!?" She was excited, but sound very rude. Her grey paws won't keep still. She wanted to learn so badly. "Come on! Please!" She pleaded. She gave a cheesy smile and tilted her head.

Rockfang gave a single grunt and got to her feet. She shook the straw from her pelt and looked at her apprentice, quietly contemplating what she would start today's training with. "Fine, Rainpaw," she meowed. Her voice was still slightly hoarse; the fire had not been kind to her throat. "We'll start by hunting today, all right? I'm sure that you're ready to begin, but I'm going to ask in case you aren't...do you want to start now? There are some mice in the loft we can go after." Despite all of the problems that AquaClan was facing, Rockfang could gladly put them aside for an afternoon of training with Rainpaw.

Rainpaw felt a shock of excitement. "Yes! Yes!" She burst. The grey apprentice was so happy she could start training before any of her other littermates. Mousepaw will be so jealous! She was so happy she could brag, well, unless they learned stuff today too, but other than that, she could. She put a large smile on her face and looked at Rockfang with her bright blue eyes.

"Okay," Rockfang meowed, stretching her legs before jumping on a hay bale. "Follow me." She leapt up from the bale and landed lightly in the dim, musty loft. Immediately, the deputy began to scent the air; she was checking for any signs of mice. The ones she noticed first were lurking in a corner, nibbling on a scrap of leaf. "Be very still," she commanded in a low voice. "They will feel you before they smell you but smell you before they see you." The catch would not be a difficult one--perfect for her young apprentice.

Rainpaw looked at her mentor and gave a quick nod. She crouched to the ground uncornfortably and started to stalk the mouse. She tried to avoid twigs and leaves that would easily show the mouse she was going to eat it. Okay, this is my time to shine. She pounced way before she had to, but the air she got into the leap, got her to get her hind legs to step on the mouse. The grey apprentice dove her head under her belly and grabbed the mouse by it's neck, she smashed it's neck and let it dangle in her jaw. "It feels weird in my mouth. I think I broke it's neck." She meowed.

Moonstream sighed as Stormstrike walked in, carrying freshkill. Her pelt clung to her ribs and bones, though her fur shone as always. Her silver pelt gleamed in the dusk of the barn. Regardless to say, she hated this. She missed AquaClan. Though she was grateful to the rogues for letting them stay in their barn, she wanted to go home. Her stomach flopped as she thought of AquaClan territory, homesickness making her paws shake. Grabbing the last of her herbs, she brought them over to the warriors and apprentices, though her stomach rumbled silently. This would help with their hunger. "Eat up," she said wearily.

Snowfur finally reached the barn. He padded through the opening and went over to the new fresh-kill pile. It wasn't much but it's not like it was green leaf outside these boring and dull barn walls. He dropped the scrawny mouse and looked around. Although he wasn't in the mood to chat, he padded over to Moonstream. "What do we have here Moonstream?" He asked, looking at the berries.

Shadowsoul walked up to Moonstream and Snowfur. "Sorry to bother you but my belly really hurts. I was wondering if I could have a herb or something?" The black she-cat looked at the berries she already had. I hope those will work. She swayed her tail back and foruth, anxious to heal her sore belly.

Moonstream replied, "Of course, Shadowsoul." She pushed some of the remaining berries toward the black she-cat, smiling. Turning back to Snowfur, she told him, "These should help with your empty stomachs. There's so little left that they won't last long, but it'll help, even for a short while." Nudging them closer to the warriors, she smiled again. "Eat up."

Shadowsoul smiled. "Thank you so much." She let out a soft purr. She lapped up the couple of berries that Moonstream had pushed towards her. She licked her lips quickly after swallowing the last berry. She noticed Snowfur standing in front of Moonstream again. "Hey Snowfur, how about we hunt together for a little bit, so when the herb wheres off you won't have to be hungry." Shadowsoul suggested. She gave a small smile to the tom.

Snowfur looked at the berries Moonstream had pushed towards him. "Thank you, Moonstream." He meowed, lapping them up into his mouth. "Hopefully the undergrowth back at our territory will return quicker then most expect, that way we can finally return home." He then watched as Moonstream took care of Shadowsoul. He looked around at the other cats that were still in the barn but he turned his head in Shadowsoul's direction in the mention of hunting. "Oh, sure Shadowsoul. Sounds like a good idea to me."

Moonstream smiled. "You're welcome, Snowfur. Shadowsoul. And hunting sounds like a fantastic idea. If you see anymore of these berries," she nudged the few remaining, "can you please bring the ripe ones back? It would make my life so much easier." She glanced around the the freezing and starving cats. "I wish that leafbare would end soon."

Shadowsoul smiled because of Snowfur saying yes. She hasn't been hunting since she had kits. Too bad the barn isn't like the forest they lived in. All the mice that lived in the barn took notice and left. Shadowsoul also hasn't eaten since nightfall. And it was already dusk. The black she-cat looked at Moonstream and smiled. "Jupiter berries right?" She knew a little bit about herbs because her twolegs grew a lot in their garden. And Rosethorn taught her a little bit about herbs too.

Moonstream smiled, her eyes brightening. "Close. It's juniper," she replied, laughing a little. She licked a paw delicately, shivering slightly with the cold. "Thank you so much, Shadowsoul. And be careful. You're still not at full strength." She turned to Snowfur. "You'll look out for her, won't you?"

"Of course I will, Moonstream." Snowfur meowed. He looked over at the black she-cat. Although he felt he didn't belong in the clan, he would still do anything for his clanmates. That included sacrificing his life. "Are you ready to start hunting?"

"Of course!" Shadowsoul lit up a smile. Her tail flew straight up and her eyes when round. Yes! One of the first times I get to hunt in moons! Since her kits were out of the nursery, she had to worry about keeping healthy, so she had to stay within shelter. "I hope we catch a few things." The black she-cat's tone was worried. "The clan needs the strength."
