Galena lay outstretched on her favorite garden wall, with one paw on top of the other. A chilly wind blew by, carrying a faint scent of other cats, but she ignored it. She was used to the smells of her neighbors and the cats of the forest that would occasionally flounce by. Rather, she was observing her surroundings. The foliage lining the wall looked dead and decrepit, save for a holly bush flanking a granite birdbath. The luster of the holly's emerald leaves and bright red berries was slightly dulled by a glaze of frost resting upon them, but to Galena, it only beautified the plant. With mild interest, she leaned forward to get a better look at the bush and pondered out loud, "I wonder why the birds can feast on the berries while both man and cat dare not touch the plant."

Ralf was sitting in his garden, with his mother next to him. He had missed his mother so much, but not like this. Maddie had missed Ralf way too much, it's like loosing your life, then finding it again, it was strange. Ralf streached out and let out a large yawn. His brown coat blended into the stained, wooden fence. It sounded like Maddie was breathing on his neck, her different colored pelt shined and showed a glossy touch to it. His mother had that sweet sent, like the one kits smell in the nursery, at first born. Ralf flinched as he heard a small, mew. Maddie jumped to her feet. "Lets go check it out," Ralf whispered. Maddie said nothing but nodded, she leaped over the nearest wall of the fence. Ralf followed. Maddie landed in front of the red berried bush. Ralf, into the birdbath. Ralf heard a hiss, from his mother. Maddie's glossy coat walked among the beautiful garden. "Hello?" she purred. Maddie wanted to not to be the large, broad, she-cat she was. She wanted to try and show her pretty side of her personality. Ralf, just sat it the birdbath, irritated of the fact that he landed into water.

"Oh, hello," meowed Galena, turning her head to look at her neighbors. "I haven't seen you around here before. Of course, I don't really see much around here. Most days I'm just out on my wall, looking around at various objects of interest. Anyways, my name is Galena. Yours?" Her tone was light and polite; the cat was obviously behaving in a friendly manner. However, her congeniality was just a way of getting the other cats to speak with her. She relished learning about those different from herself.

Ralf smiled at his nieghbor. "I'm Ralf, I live nextdoor, and my this is-" "Maddie," Maddie purred, "I live in the old Twoleg barn a little whiles away. I'm Ralf's mother." "I like your home, it's pretty, except the birdbath, I don't really like that." Ralf purred loudly. His tone was ginger, and low. Maddie walked over to Ralf, who was now licking himself, sitting on a rock. Maddie's tongue rapped around his neck, while Ralf licked his flank and tail. "Your housefolk's nice, mine are," Ralf meowed, trying to make small talk. Maddie rolled her eyes, "he means, if you like your home." she purred.

Galena dipped her head to each of the others in turn. "Hello, Ralf, Maddie," she meowed. "The birdbath is a lot more interesting during the warmer times of year, when there are actually birds in it. It's usually frozen over in the winter. And to answer your question, my housefolk are nice. Of course, they insist on keeping me out here while they're away. They don't seem to trust me; even my litterbox is kept out in the yard. "Maddie: You say Ralf's your son, right? I wouldn't mind having kits." There was just the slightest touch of remorse in her voice. It was barely noticeable, but could be picked up by a careful ear.

Maddie became interested. "What do you mean, wouldn't mind having kits. Ralf was a handful, surprised how much one kit took to keep in one piece. There are many toms living in the barns around the corner." Maddie meowed. What does she mean? She doesn't look old, why could she not have kits? her mind rung with thoughts. Ralf purred, as he remained licking his pelt. The frost was cold, and freezing him. Maddie walked over to her kit and started to lick his pelt backwards, to warm him up.

"Have you ever met a kittypet who's said that they've been to 'The Cutter'? They took me there." Galena shuddered at the memory. "It was dreadful. They stick something sharp into your leg that makes you fall asleep and you wake up with bandages around your belly. I was sort of out of it then; I don't know that if it was from whatever was in the needle or just from the pain. But they do something that means you can't have kits." She finished her tirade there and thoughtfully examined her front paws. "My twolegs took me back shortly after to have my front claws taken out," the kittypet added with a slightly mournful note to her voice.

Maddie stared at the kittypet with amazement and sorrow. "You poor thing!" Maddie wailed. "I've been there but the pointy thing just made me feel a lot better, it felt like I had a bad stomach ache." Ralf murmured. His tone was a slight hiss. He sat down, his heart fell as Maddie meowed, "I heard Twolegs do that for you to live longer or something." Her head slightly tilted, confused. Her white face just said, What?!?

Galena shrugged. "Maybe they do. I've heard that it can prevent certain diseases, but I've also heard that it makes you lose some of your instinct. The world just never seemed as sharp to me after that. It ceased to be something to conquer but rather something to master. And before you ask, there is a difference," she added with a glint in her eyes. "I didn't know that they take you there just for a stomachache, though. I haven't gotten sick once, except for a cough in the middle of the snow-time. They brought me inside and tried to keep me under a blanket." Galena winced. "I got over it, but they seemed to get all skittish every time I'd cough."

Maddie's eyes flicked. "Interesting, well I live in the horse barn and Twolegs supply kittypet food, and this creamy water," she meowed. "Yeah! I think they call it milk?" Ralf explained. "I get that stuff all the time!" he purred. "Well, I don't eat the food, but a little bit of the milk." Maddie confessed.

"Hmmm. I have food and water. They gave me milk once but it got all rotten. Do yours give you solid food or mushy food? I've had both." Galena yawned. "I prefer the solid. It has less flavor but it doesn't get in stuck in your whiskers and all over your fur."
