Crashing Wave padded toward the stream, watching the rushing water. Her legs shook as they carried her toward it. She knew she could be swept away. It had been raining recently. But she didn't care. She wanted to be swept away. So she could forget the memories.
"Crashing Wave! Over here!" His voice was like deep wind chimes that you found around the No-Furs. She reveled in the sound as she bounded over. He was so perfect. He was hers. Roiling Cloud.
"I have to tell you something," his voice rumbled, purring. She nodded, her eyes shining with the love and excitement and everything as she looked at him. How had she gotten so lucky? He was everything.
"Of course. Don't hesitate, just tell me."
"This is important," he told her sternly. "No jokes."
"No jokes."
"I love you." She laughed, smiling. Euphoria. Now everything was right in the world.
"I know. I love you too."
She shook away the memory, tears biting at her gray eyes. She bit her tongue so a cry wouldn't escape. She wouldn't cry. No. She stepped closer, her entire body shaking as she saw the waters reaching claws at her toes. She could do this. This was what she wanted. What she needed. The small tortoiseshell and white she-cat didn't want to remember anything. Not about him. Of course, her brother and sister would be sad, but they would live on. Sparkling Snow had another family - a mate and kits. She would survive without her depressed, practically-dead sister. Burning Sand was strong; even without a mate or a sister, he could get through this. He was strong. He could. He could get through without her. Of course, everybody could.
Only a few more steps. Even her claws were shaking. But all this fear, pain, and regret would be over soon. She would feel glorious nothingness. That's all she could ask for.
