Nodding to Nightshade, Spider crouched down on his little rock, and bunched up the powerful muscles of his hind legs. He bobbed his head up a few times as he attempted to judge the distance and pressure needed to make it. Don't overthink. That's when mistakes happen. Taking a deep breath, he lept. His fore paws hit the mossy surface and he slid forward, claws scrabbling to get a grip. As his hind paws followed behind him, he slid forward further until he was looking right into the water. Spider dug his claws into the moss and shuffled backwards away from the water edge. Heart thumping against his rib cage, he looked up at Nightshade and gave a weak smile. "Overshot it a little..."

"A little...only a little," Nightshade replied, voice almost hysterical. "Only two more of these horrendous rocks to go before I'm back on solid, un-mossy ground." She took a few breaths before she realized that she had been nearly hyperventilating and instantly slowed her respiratory rate. She crouched again, black fur shining in the bleak sunlight. Then, with another almighty leap, she flew through the air, coming short of the rock by inches. When she realized her mistake, she frantically flailed her paws in the air and managed to get her first two to graze the moss on the rock. She wasn't quite sure what happened next, only that it involved a huge kick with her hind legs and she ended up dead center on the rock with a racing heart and shaking limbs.

Spider was slightly surprised at the hysteria in Nightshade's voice but he then remembered his own panic when he had watched her make the jump. There had been a huge amount of fear that she would miss and fall. He smiled weakly and sighed happily, "Solid ground". He took a deep breath in a attempt to slow his thumping heart. The effort was wasted as he watched Nightshade jump to the next rock ahead of her. "No!" he yowled as her paws scrabbled for a hold of the rock. Everything was moving so fast and the image of Nightshade falling flashed before him. Without thinking, he lept to the next rock, nearly slipping on that cursed mossy surface. His trembling legs prepared to leap again, to the rock Nightshade clung to, when she managed to haul herself up. "Nightshade!" he cried, relief filling his horrorfied cry. His yellow eyes were wide and frantic as he called her name. If he wasn't afraid of pushing her over, he would've lept to her side.

"I'm fine," she replied shakily, stiffening her legs to steady them. "Just a little near-slip...I'm fine now." As if to prove her point, Nightshade leapt to the next rock, paws easily striking it dead center. She looked behind herself to watch Spider, silently hoping that he wouldn't make the same mistake she had with that rock. This is so scary! I'm never crossing a river like this again. Not even if it's Spider. Well, maybe if he goes...

Still shaken by Nightshade's near death, Spider had to make an effort to reach the next rock, the one which had caused her so much trouble. His long legs proved useful as his forepaws easily reached the furthest edge, followed quickly by his hindlegs. He kept his tail up for the extra balance and dug his claws into the mossy surface. He had now officialy decided that moss was the worst plant in all of existence. He glanced at Nightshade when he was sure that there was no risk of falling. "Are you really okay?" he asked, noticing her expression. "Is there enough room over there? I could come stand by you." Spider wouldn't be happy until they were both on solid ground, side by side. He hadn't realised how much Nightshade meant to him until he had nearly lost her.

"There's no way that we'll both fit on this," Nightshade pointed out, glancing downward at the rock below her. It hadn't seemed that small until she was standing on it.... Her stomach flipped at the thought. "Besides, I'm just one jump away from being on solid ground and you have two to go. We'll be together again soon." Together...what a lovely word. Empowered by this new thought, she leapt across the water from a standstill and cleared the chasm of liquid, paws finally back on the dirt. She breathed a sigh of relief and sat down out of the way so that Spider wouldn't collide with her on his final leap.

Spider nodded meekly, a sheepish smile on his face. Nightshade's words thrilled him, she truly did want him by her side. Practically floating, he lept to the rock she had just left and then finally to solid ground. It was bliss to have something besides moss under his paws and he felt his whole body relaxed. Spider quickly padded over to Nightshade, glad they were both safe. Never again would he cross the river like that. He brushed his shoulder up against Nightshade's, their fur still wet. He breathed in her scent and smiled. "Together and safe," he purred.

"Yeah," she replied softly, resting her chin on the point of Spider's shoulder. "I hated crossing those rocks. Apart from nearly falling to my death, I had to be alone." The word was like a curse upon Nightshade's lips; a horror that none should be subjected to; the worst thing that had happened to any cat anywhere. She tensed her muscles and fluffed up her black pelt. Doing so robbed the fur of all of its previous sheen, but she did not care. Not freezing took priority over looks in this situation.

Spider dipped his head and gently licked her muzzle. He felt completely guilt ridden that he made Nightshade cross the rocks with him, and as she said, alone too. He had promised her that they would cross the river together but then he and gone and said "Look! We can cross using these rocks!" "I'm so sorry," he meowed, sincerely. "Never again. I swear on StarClan, on anything you want." He lightly stepped away from her and gave her his trademark smile, small but reassuring. The mood was a little to heavy for his usually boisterous self. "Let's get to BeachClan. I'm cold and hungry!"

Nightshade smirked. "Me too. I can only hope that my dearest brother cares about me enough to feed us. Can't they see that we're cold, starving, and sooty? Do you know what kind of food they have there? The prey where I come from was mostly forest critters--squirrels, squirrels, and the occasional squirrel. Oh, and maybe a bird or two if we were lucky." She fluffed up her fur to insulate herself better against the leaf-fall chill.

"You forgot muddy," Spider laughed, flicking some of the mud in question off a paw. If cats had eyebrows he would of raised them. Squirrels only? The small fluffy things were forever getting stuck in his teeth and he found that the meat was usually too tough. Thank goodness this place has so much variation. "From what I have heard BeachClan eat fish they catch from fishing holes and sometimes crabs. But whenever I hunt there I catch sparrows and thrushes from the forest. There is shrews, voles, some rabbit and other birds like pigeon." He turned to look at Nightshade and smiled, licking his lips. "A lovely feast for a couple of rogues like us."

Nightshade smiled, baring her teeth. "Lovely feast indeed," she meowed with a hint of a growl in her voice. "I've never had fish before, but from what I hear, it's the best food out there. I believe that it's renowned for its superb flavor and its tendencies to create a shiny coat. Have I heard right, Spider?" She too licked her lips, kneading the muddy ground softly with her forepaws, making them all the dirtier.

Spider's yellow eyes blazed with the idea of the hunt and he smiled at Nightshade. "You have certaintly heard right. Fish meat is rich and oily and has lots of health benefits. Glossy fur like the scales of the fish your eating!" He could almost taste it now....so lovely. He hadn't eaten fish in a long time due to the fact he found them so hard to catch. But he would have to try, Nightshade had never tried fish before. "Let's go find Quietshadow then. I'm going to get you a fish!" Spider announced.

"Ooooh, thanks," purred Nightshade, arching her back mid-step before continuing alongside Spider. Despite the calamitous river crossing that they had endured, today was turning out rather well. She was going to get to talk to her only living family member and try fish, both while accompanied by her favorite cat in the world. She gave a soft, contented purr. How lovely. And it's getting colder...that feels just like home.

"It's really nothing," Spider murmured, slightly embrassed. Despite that though, he couldn't keep a smile from forming on his face. He had been smiling and laughing more lately since he had met Nightshade. Even after a near-death experience, with her at his side it made all his trouble's wash away. A cold breeze from the sea moved through the forest causing Spider to fluff up his fur in wet clumps. For warmth, but mainly just for comfort, he moved closer to Nightshade until his fur was brushing against hers. It was nice knowing that she was there.

"No, it's something," Nightshade insisted, hopping about a mouse-length into the air and landing with her fur also fluffed. "Not that I'm trying to sound whiny, but are we almost there? I wouldn't mind curling up on a sandy beach and drying out a little, with a pile of fish by my side." And you too, of course, she added silently. The rogue took the tiniest step to the side while maintaining her gait so that she and Spider were practically shoulder-to-shoulder.

Spider stared at Nightshade, his face displaying perfect contentment. A purr rumbled deep in his chest, a rough sound for he had never had a real reason. He had purred, a lovely soft-velvet sound, for twolegs because it thrilled them and that often meant a little more food would be added to his dish. But never because of true bliss like this. A day in the sunshine could never compare to a day thwating danger with Nightshade. "Nearly there," he meowed softly," You can smell the salt from the ocean. I don't suspose they have one in the mountains? An ocean, I mean. They really are quite something. We'll go there first and that way we can also nap in the sand."

Nightshade smiled upon hearing Spider's purr. A faint rumble escaped her throat as well before she lifted her head to scent the air. "I do smell it. I've smelled this salt before. We had deposits of it on the sides of the mountains. There would be a lot of goats there because they would lick the salt up. And occasionally we would find a carcass--hawks liked to hunt them there--and we'd try some goat meat. It's got an interesting flavor, but it's tough and you have to fight the birds for it. As for oceans, we never had any back home. There was a huge lake down the mountain, but it wasn't salty in the least. So this should be interesting." She gave a soft, contented sigh. A nap in the sand sounded pleasant--and all the more pleasant if Spider was by her side.

"I've never seen a 'goat' before," Spider commented. His gaze was distant as he began trying to imagine what a goat might look like. He came to the conclusion it was a very large type of squirrel dog. He smiled to himself while shaking his head and gave a quiet chuckle. Goats indeed. What a silly idea. "Well today Nightshade, we are going to sleep in the sand and eat fish until our fur is glossy. And if you want you can drink from the ocean just to say you've tried. Although, I don't recommend it."

"If it's salty like you said, then it doesn't sound good," Nightshade replied, kicking her heels up behind her. "But I still can't wait to try these fish. And of course, to meet Quietshadow. And go somewhere warm!" She fluffed her fur up at the very thought. As the forest grew closer and closer to leaf-bare--or as she called it, snow-fall--the temperatures continued to drop with each passing night. True, she was used to the cold, but that didn't mean that she was fond of it.
ooc: Sure. :3

"Perhaps Quietshadow can help us, although the Clan cats might be a little busy seeing as how AquaClan had a fire and all," Spider meowed smiling. Yawning, he stopped walking and shook the last droplets of water from his fur. He completely agreed with Nightshade in finding somewhere warm. If they didn't dry out their pelts they could easily fall ill. The weather was getting colder and prey would become scarce. Spider suddenly longed for his little rabbit den in the Rogue Nest. He would have to find somewhere new to sleep. Someplace big enough for him and Nightshade. A grin spread across his face and he began walking again, this time at a faster pace.

Nightshade yawned and continued after him, picking up the pace so that she could keep pace with Spider. "Probably. There will probably be room in the sand somewhere unless BeachClan lives up to their name and really does sleep on the beach." She smirked at the thought and licked her lips. "I really can't wait to try the fish, though. ValleyClan had a little fish-filled river and I've heard that they make good eating. The fish, not the ValleyClanners."
