Maddie laughed. "My daughter was like that. But then the Twolegs took her away once she was old enough. They had here at their local cat giving thing." she meowed. "They like give them to each other, it's really weird." she told. She walked her way into a cracked window of the older barn. "This way," she meowed softly. She landed into a pile of hay. She was in a box holding a horse. "This is Missy, she's real nice, don't scare her though," she whispered to the two cats behind here. "Hey Mikey!" she purred as she touched noses to a grey tabby tom. "I'm taking these two cats up to see Sheena," she meowed, "cover me while I'm gone, should be back in a couple of days." "Ocean, Shadow, this is Mikey, another barn cat." she purred.

Shadow padded into the barn after Maddie, solemnly. When she noticed two other cats, she perked up. "Hi, I'm Curly, nice to meet you!" Ocean rolled her eyes again. "I'm Ocean, and her real name's Shadow, just so you know," she said politely. She was eager to get out again. Shadow just seemed happy to see other cats. But before Ocean could say anything, Shadow was gone, searching for strange things to add to her collection.

"Okay Mikey, see you in a few days," she purred to the tom. The tom just nodded. "Okay, lets hit the walking," she meowed turning to the two cats. "Wait, where did Shadow go?" she asked. "Shadow! Come on! We have to go!" she called. "Well Ocean, lets start at the moonpool and work our way up." she meowed. She jumped back into Missy's stall and jumped out the broken window. She waited for her two friends.

Ocean looked around for her daughter. "Shadow, come on! We're leaving!" she exclaimed anxiously. Shadow groaned loudly and came out from a hay bale. "You never let me do anything," she growled. Ocean rolled her eyes and swatted her. Shadow hissed and sped up, keeping her eyes down on her paws, heading towards the Moonpool without Maddie and Ocean. Ocean sighed, catching up with Maddie. "I don't understand her sometimes. She just can't stand things not being perfect. Sometimes I think it might have been better if Ace had stayed with me," she murmured quietly, mostly to herself.

"I know how you feel, when my kits and mate was taken away from me, I wouldn't let myself do anything. Then I noticed one of my kits running away from the place and it made me feel a lot more happy." she meowed. She stopped and licked her chest, then caught back up with Ocean. "She could make some good friends with Sheena, but we might run into another clan. She told me that Beachclan's leader is kind of scary, and her leader looks kinda old. Then the Frostclan leader is white and really small. Then Rainclan is a larger tom." she meowed. Then she breathed in a large breath. "Now that was a paw full of words." she purred. "Not to be nosy but how old is Shadow?" she asked. She new that Ocean and her were somewhat in the same age.

Ocean nodded, remembering seeing the small white tom and possibly the bigger one on their way to the Moonpool. "Shadow's only 8 moons. She'll be nine moons soon but she still acts like she's a kit! Honestly, though? Shadow's great to have around. At least Tom didn't take both my kits..." Shadow padded along ahead of the two elder she-cats. She had her tail drooped and her eyes trained on her paws. Honestly mother, you have to let me grow up at some point! She sighed softly, and looked up, to make sure she was still going in the right direction.

Maddie sniffed the air. "I can smell a stale sent of cats. They must have just been here acouple of nights ago." she meowed. "The moonpool should be close. Then she came apoun a large bush. Then she saw a silver-like pool. It rapped around the ground holding sparkling water. "Here, lets take a break and drink some water." she meowed. She bend down into the water and dipped her long pink tounge into the water. It gave her a shock as the cold, misty water crawled down her throat.

Shadow lapped up a couple drops of the silver water, letting the cool, misty water slither down her throat. She then slunk into the shadows to sulk. Ocean sighed as she watched her daughter hunch over in the shadows. She hesitantly lapped up some of the misty water, letting the cold wash away her worries about her daughter. She settled down beside Maddie to rest.

Maddie looked at Ocean for a while then finally said, "lets go, the sun's setting." She lept to her brown paws and headed north, following the shadows. Shadowsoul said that clans are toward the shadows, not the sunset or sun. she thought, trying to remember her friends words. She jumped over a big log and sniffed the air. Shadow, Ocean, rabbits, and oak. she thought.

Shadow dropped back to the back, tail still drooping. Ocean set her pace alongside her daughter. "Shadow, can you please lighten up? Maybe we'll end up in RainClan, and you can see your friend, Spottedpaw." Shadow seemed to lighten up a bit at that, but her tail still left a trail behind them. "Shadow. I am your mother. You get perky and happy this very second, or, so help me StarClan, you will not leave that barn for a moon." Shadow glared at her mother, then a thoughtful expression came across her face. "Regardless of the Clan, will you call me Curly when we get there?" Ocean's eyes widened. "No! Absolutely not! Shadow is your name, the name that I gave you. So that's the name that you'll stick with." Shadow hurumphed and her ears laid back against her head. Ocean rolled her eyes and picked up her pace to match Maddie's.

Maddie jumped over a gorse bush and started to see more and more shadows. "Now once it's dark, the stars will show, and follow the leaders, the greatest star in the sky?" she meowed aloud. "I don't get it. Shadowsoul said something about following the leaders, they're the brightest in the sky, I think she said," she meowed to Ocean. "Do you get it?" she asked as she jumped over another log. She thought of an idea. "Hey Shadow, want to play a game?" she asked just trying to through ideas out to cheer the young cat up. "How about you can try to find a large tree with squirrels in it. If you find one with the prey in it, I'll catch it for you and you only!" she meowed. "And once I catch it, you can eat it once we get to our camping spot. I can teach you how to hunt!" she purred. "Now what do you say?" she asked nicely.

Ocean followed Maddie, thinking about what she said. "The brightest star in the sky? Hmm...I don't know." She turned to her daughter. "What do you say, Shadow? Do you know what it means?" Shadow just shrugged. "I guess I could find a tree with squirrels in it," she muttered. She slunk off into the dark.

Maddie just shrugged as she saw the small cat lug off. "I was just trying to cheer you up, Shadowsoul has a friend who is your age and he's pretty nice," she purred, still thinking of things the say, to cheer her up. All of a sudden she heard a hiss. "We need to get moving I think I heard a snake!" she meowed softly, then she bolted off into the night and ended up about five minutes later she stopped and ran into the hollow tree with a nice little resting spot in it. "Ocean! I found a spot where we can sleep tonight!" she called. She crouched down and pounced onto a pile of straw and poked her head out with a mouse. She laid it down into the tree and started to climb a tree. It had a crow in it. She hissed softly and let it's limp body hit the ground. She smiled and jumped, she had a rabbit in her mouth. She sat down and waited for the others.

Ocean raced after Maddie, only then realizing that Shadow probably hadn't heard the call. "I have to go find Shadow!" She streaked away, her belly fur on the ground. Her eyes darted everywhere, looking for her daughter. Shadow was farther in the forest than she thought. She decided to turn back around and go back to the path her mother and Maddie were taking. She sighed in defeat and padded this way and that. She finally found the trail that had lead her here and started backtracking. She was halfway there when a cat landed on her, covering her with licks. "Shadow, oh thank StarClan you're all right!" Ocean meowed, still licking her ears, and cheeks, and head, and everywhere. "Come with me, Maddie found a nice place to stay and some food we can eat." She gave her daughter one more lick before letting her tail lie across Shadow's shoulders and leading her daughter. "Mothers..." Shadow muttered.

Maddie saw the two she-cats walk through the bushes. "I thought I lost you! I thought you couldn't pick up my sent trail and get lost!" she meowed. "Here, I got you something to eat." she meowed finally with a smile on her muzzle. She gave Ocean the rabbit, Shadow the crow, and herself, the small mouse. She didn't want to seem a pig or something by taking the mouth watering rabbit. So she felt nice and gave it away. She dug her teeth into small piece of prey and ripped apart its pelt and spit out its remaining bones. She smiled and waited a minute. She stood up. "I'll be right back." she meowed softly. She grabbed the bones of the mouse and jabbed then hopped over a bush. She walked a few minutes and then stopped. She put the bones aside and started to dig a small hole. Then she pushed the bones into the hole, along with some dirt. She then walked back to the others.

Shadow ate the crow slowly, mostly because she had mainly eaten mouse and rat and never had crow. Not even rabbit! It was like she had been cut off from the whole world. She also took the bones once she was finished and buried them. She came back. "I'm going to go to sleep," she muttered quietly. Ocean nibbled at the rabbit, not very hungry, but not wanting to waste this much food. She sucked it up and ate the rabbit, ignoring her protesting stomach. She'd deal with that later. She followed Shadow's lead, who had left to go to sleep, and buried the bones. She came back to Maddie.

"I'll hit the sleeping too," Maddie meowed quietly. She hopped up into a large branch in the tree. She didn't fall asleep, but she was keeping watch. She didn't know what was out here and she didn't want to take ANY chances. She kept her eyes open, wide open.

Ocean sighed, heaving herself up and pressing herself close to her daughter. With any luck, she'd fall asleep very soon. She closed her eyes and felt sleep envelop her.

Maddie was getting tired and suddenly, her eyes closed, then opened, then closed. They never opened. Her paws under her chin and a smile on her face. She was finally asleep.

Ocean's eyes blinked open, sun seeping through the entrance to her makeshift den. She eased up, making sure that she didn't disrupt Shadow's sleeping, and padded out, stretching and shaking out dirt and leaves from her pelt. She looked around for Maddie, finding her sleeping up in the tree.

Maddie shook her head and opened her eyes. Morning already? she thought. "Now that was the best sleep I had in a moon," Maddie joked. The tabby she-cat leapt down from the large branch and landed right next Ocean. "I can hunt for us," she offered. She streched out and yawned. Her bach arched and her jaw opened wide. She walked to get used to the fresh air for the day.
She sniffed the air and froze. There was a magpie hopping around. It was really small though. It must've fallen out of it's nest. She crouched down and leapt. "I should find a lot more. I'm starving only having that small meal yesterday!" she hissed to herself. She watched a mother and father rabbit come out of a bush. The one was more fat, so it must be having kits soon. She leaped and landed on both the two rabbits. She jumped up and bit into the one real hard. The other just laid there. She hissed and bit into the other rabbit. "This should do me and Ocean?" she thought. Then she sniffed the air. Nothing! Nothing she could sniff out. "Darn prey, I'll just have the madpie then," she meowed quietly. She picked up all the prey she had caught and joined the others. "This is all I could find. Sorry," she meowed.

Ocean nodded. "Alright. I'll have the magpie. I'm not that hungry," she said. She looked back toward her daughter, who was still curled up asleep. She smiled to herself.
Shadow felt conciousness seep back into her slowly. She kept her eyes closed, hoping to fall back to sleep, but it was impossible. She got up, stretching and yawning, padding out into the bright sunlight of morning. She saw her mother and Maddie with two rabbits and a tiny magpie. "Great, food. I'm starving," she said sleepily.

Maddie watched the small cat and pushed one of the rabbits toward the young cat. Then she pushed the magpie toward Ocean. "Eat up, we won't be able to eat till sunset, if we don't find the clans," she meowed. She ate her meal slowly, but quickly at the same time. She sat up and dug a hole and shoved the left overs into the hole. "Here, I'm going to take the lead, I think it rained last night and the ground is real muddy, follow my paw prints." she meowed.
Maddie had sniffed around, smelling ash and Twolegs. "There must had been a fire," she meowed to herself. She looked to see some Twolegs still walking around. "Oh no," she thought. She ran back to Ocean and Shadow. "We have trouble," she meowed.

Ocean looked up from burying the bones. "Trouble? What trouble? What kind of trouble?" she asked frantically, going to stand with Shadow protectively. Shadow groaned and buried her bones with her mother's, while the tortoiseshell followed her like her shadow. "Could this day go worse? First we have to trek for StarClan knows how long, then we have to speak with the Clans and trek all the way back, but in between we have to deal with whatever trouble you've found? I swear, this has got to be the worst journey of my life!" She collapsed on the ground in frustration. Ocean replied timidly, "The worst was when you cut your paw on the glitter when you were three moons old and we had to take you to the Clans in pain." Shadow hissed at her mother. "Must you remember everything?" she said moodily, then went back into the tree to sulk.

"Twolegs," she hissed. "Lots and lots, if we run passed them fast, we could make it to this river," she meowed. "And another thing, I think there was a fire," she meowed. She started to walk again. Follow me, but then when I say when, we spilt up and run for it, because if we go together, they could catch one of us." she meowed. She walked some more and saw Twolegs. "When!" she hissed.
Maddie bolted and passed up two Twolegs and a dog. "Dogs!" she yowled. One of the dogs barked and she just hissed back. Maddie rushed herself. "Come on, faster!" she told herself. She was running out of breath, and speed. She stopped. "Oh no," she hissed. a dog was pounding after her. She saw a small river a little whiles away. she bolted out once more and looked back, seeing the dog had stopped, she stuck her tounge out at the small dog and when she looked back, she fell into the water. "Fox-dung!" she hissed. "Ocean, Shadow, the river's over here!" she yowled.

Ocean raced away from Maddie and Shadow, looking fearfully back at her daughter as she streaked past another dog. The dog barked, but it was fat and lazy and left Ocean alone. Shadow on the other hand was not so lucky. "Mom, help!" she yowled as a large black and tan dog caught a wiff of her scent and started chasing after her. It was gaining on her fast. An anger welled up inside the tortoiseshell and she flew over to her daughter, leaping up onto the dog's back and biting hard into its ear. It howled in pain. The two cats took the advantage and fled, flying over the river in a haste. Ocean hurriedly helped her new friend out of the water, shivering at the sight of the drenched cat. "Thanks, Mom," Shadow panted, trying to catch her breath. Her mother just smiled and licked her ear. "I'm your mother. Do you think I'd let that dog catch you?" she breathed, licking her other ear. Shadow shook her head, grateful that her mother had been able to save her from the horrid creature. "Can we take a break? I'm beat," she said, flopping down.
